” the LORD delights in those who fear him, who put their hope in his unfailing love.”
Lucia Korkpah is seated at the far right corner of this photo. When she began our literacy class her reading level was kindergarten. She is 35 years old and has 5 children. Three children live with her and her husband. Her sons ages 12 and 7 attend the government school in our community.
Last week for the first time she was able to help her children with their math homework.
Lucia is in our senior class of literacy students. They are now in Book 3 of a 4 book series of the Laubach Reading Skills Books. They are very comfortable now with using the computer for their quizzes and tests online. We use a system we designed using an online free software, Quizlet.
The use of the computers has added variety to the lessons and gives them bragging rights on the streets. They love to tell their friends and family that they used the computer today.
Graduation is scheduled for December of this year. There are two classes behind this one in Book 1 and Book 2.
These classes are offered at no cost to the student. Each student receives a reading and a math book.
Our goal for 2015 is to begin the road to self-sufficiency on order to pay teaching and office staff, rent, gas for the generator, computer repairs, internet service and other expenses of running a ministry.
During the summer break we hold a Math-A-Thon competition for grades 4-9 with generous prizes for 1st-3rd place. We also hold a month long Vacation School for grades 4-8 with a focus on math, science and the arts.
Your gift is needed now to help us establish our vocational school, Silvanus Connect. If 100 persons gave $20 we would reach our goal of $2000.
Silvanus Connect will provide course training in Microsoft office suite, Introduction to Computers, Introduction to Computer Programming, Introduction to Web Design, Web Maker, STEM courses for junior and senior high school students. We are still planning our 5 year plan for the institution.
However, the school will be very unique to Liberia addressing some of the educational gaps in the system. The courses are setup in a way that students can open their own kiosk providing quality desktop publishing in 6 months time or register for IT school in 9 months.
